Review and edit subtitles in a project

Updated 31 October 2026

Use the subtitle workspace to review a track cue by cue, edit text and timing, check subtitle-rule warnings, and export the current cues as an SRT file. Open a project from Projects; a new project opens the workspace automatically.

Before you start

You need the Edit Subtitles permission to change subtitle text, timing, cue status, or the cue list. Without it, the workspace is read-only: you can play the video, read cues, and export them.

Choose a track

  1. In the workspace header, select the track button.
  2. Under SUBTITLE TRACKS, choose a track. Each track shows its language, title, and creation time; caption tracks are marked CC.

The newest track opens first. If you have unsaved changes, you are asked whether to discard them before switching tracks.

Edit cue text

  1. Select a cue in the cue list. The video jumps to that cue.
  2. Double-click the text or press Enter.
  3. Edit the text. Use a line break to create a second line.
  4. Press Esc, press ⌘/Ctrl+Enter, or click elsewhere to finish.
  5. Select Save changes.

Change cue timing

Select a cue, then use any of these methods:

  • Select In −0.1s, In +0.1s, Out −0.1s, or Out +0.1s beside the cue timing.
  • Drag the cue’s in and out grips on the timeline.
  • Press Shift+← or Shift+→ to move the whole cue by 0.1 seconds.
  • Press Alt+← or Alt+→ to change the cue’s out point.

Every cue must have an out-point after its in-point. Otherwise, saving is refused.

Add or remove cues

  1. Select the cue that the new cue should follow.
  2. Select Add cue, or press N. The new empty cue is inserted in the gap before the next cue and opens for typing.
  3. Enter the cue text and set its timing on the timeline.
  4. To remove a cue, select it and choose Delete cue, or press Delete or Backspace.
  5. Select Save changes.

On an empty track, Add cue creates the first cue.

Review subtitle-rule warnings

The cue list shows the rule set used by the track. Reading speed is shown in characters per second and turns red when it exceeds the rule-set limit. Other notes identify issues such as too many characters or lines, a duration that is too short or long, an insufficient gap, or an overlap with the next subtitle.

Warnings update while you type or retime cues. Saving does not refuse cues that break the rules; instead, the workspace reports how many saved subtitles still break the rule set. For details about the available rules, see Subtitle rule sets.

Save safely

Select Save changes in the header or press ⌘/Ctrl+S. Saving stores the text, timing, and approve or flag status for the open track. The button shows Saved when there is nothing to save.

Switching tracks or closing or reloading the browser tab prompts you about unsaved changes. Other dashboard links do not prompt, so save before leaving the workspace.

Export the current track

Select Export SRT to download the open track as an SRT file. The export includes edits currently in the editor, even if they have not been saved. The filename is based on the project and language, with .cc added for a caption track.

To download saved tracks, use the Export card on the Project review page. See Subtitle and transcription projects in detail.

Use Video Intelligence while editing

When the project has a finished Video Intelligence analysis and you have the View Video Intelligence permission, the workspace can show:

  • A SPEAKER column with the speaker, face-match percentage, transcript attribution, or an indication that no face was found.
  • Chapters along the top; select a chapter to jump to its first cue.
  • A context panel for the selected cue with the scene, speaker, detected names for spelling reference, and notes about issues such as overlapping speech, a cue crossing a cut, faces in frame, an off-frame speaker, a sound in the mix, or high reading speed.

If analysis is still running, the header says that Video Intelligence is processing.
